Gotthelf came to Victoria in 1855 with his parents and attended school at Hochkirch (Tarrington). After their marriage, Gotthelf and Henriette lived at "Poplar Valley" (near Breackneck corner) in the old Hundrack family home. Gotthelf eventually took over "Poplar Valley" and made it their home, where they owned approximately 60 acres of land. The family milked cows and made their own butter. They also baked their bread and kuchen in a large bake-oven made of mud and stone. In later years thay had some sheep. Henriette and Gotthelf had a large family of ten children. Their home "Poplar Valley" was made of mud, straw and logs with a thatched roof. It had seven rooms and an upstairs loft, with extra sleeping accommodation. The grandchildren believed Father Christmas lived in the loft as at Christmas time.   Grandmother Schultz climed up unnoticed and threw nuts from the loft to the family. The family attended church in Hochkirch every Sunday morning. Most walked as there wasn't room in the double seater buggy for all to ride. On Sunday evenings they would often walk back to Tarrington for an evening with relations or friends. In later years the family each received 20 acres of land from their parents. These blocks were all situated between Pierre Point and Breakneck corner area. Heinrich (Harry) walked approximately three miles every day to his block on which was a large stone quarry which now belongs to Noske Bros., Hamilton. Ashely Schneider now owns the block which belonged to Paul.
