On October 12, 1846, Johann Samuel, Anna Rosina and their three children left Bremen on the ship The Heliose (476 tons) under Captain Beckmann. It had five passengers in the cabin; and in the steerage 62 male adults, 38 married women, six female servants and 103 children - a total of 214. They arrived in Port Adelaide on March 17, 1847. After their arrival, Samuel and Rosina and their young family settled at Hoffnungsthal, about two miles from Rowland Flats, 40 miles, north-east of Adelaide. Whilst at Hoffnungsthal, Samuel and Rosina had five more children. Samuel was naturalised on December 24, 1850 and became and Australian citizen at 36 years of age. In October 1853, there was a torrential downpour lasting 36 hours. The valley in which the family had built their home was soon covered to a depth of almost three metres, driving out the inhabitants. Six years of toil had been in vain, they had built in a natural basin. In 1855 Samuel and Rosina set out for Victoria to make their home and on August 27, 1855, they purchased 164 acres of land at Hochkirch [Tarrington], approximately five miles east of Hamilton. Samuel and Rosina had four more children after settling in Tarrington. As the family grew up and married they had to look further afield for land. Diengott, Wilhelm and Wilhelmine went north to make their homes, whilst the other children remained in the area. Following the death of Samuel on April 26, 1892, his youngest son Traugott, carried on the running of the property. Today it is occupied by Samuel's great-grandson, Mr. Gordon Schultz. Rosina remained there until her death on February 13, 1902.
